This and That

Hi friends! Life here has been fairly uneventful. Joel studies hard every day, we are able to keep very busy, but it’s busy with the boring stuff that isn’t too exciting to read about, so I have been saving you all from that monotony. Here are just some of the highlights since the last post.

Highlight 1: Bense Pool
I was able to go on a school organized trip to Bense Pool, it was at the beginning of the month when my neck was still a bit soar. I just went for the ride, but all of those that went on the trip without hurt necks were able to greatly enjoy a natural water slide and cliff jumping. We took a bus from the school to the little town of Bense, and from there some of the people walked and some of us jumped in the back of a local man’s truck who took us as far as he could up the trail. Unbeknownst to our tour guide they have been clearing out a big road where there use to only be a little path. It was extremely muddy for us since it had been raining a lot previous to the trip. It was an interesting slip and slide down this path. Eventually we got to the end of the excavation and it took a little rummaging but our tour guide found the little path. It was a fairly easy hike, we had to cross a few little streams and rivers, and the jungle was absolutely beautiful!  Finally we arrived at a beautiful river with a very deep pool, a little water slide leading into it, and 2 big edges on both sides perfect for cliff jumping. It was breathtakingly beautiful and incredibly fun for everyone! There were young kids, much older adventurers and everyone in between joining in the fun.

Highlight 2: This is just a story that I thought was crazy funny. Right now is Creole Festival time, they have warned us that this can be a higher crime time of year since so many other people from other islands come for the festivities. We have been trying to be careful and cautious at this time. Joel was walking home one night and noticed an unusual amount of activity on our road. As he got closer he realized it was a white truck and 2 security cars. He walked a little slower slightly apprehensive about the situation, but as he got closer he was able to see what was happening. The white truck was a local who was taking water in a bucket to his cows that he had tied up in the jungle next to our house. (There are lots of cows around where we live, the name of our street is actually called Moo Cow Road). So that’s it. A local guy was watering his cows, and 2 security cars were just pulled over watching him. Because there is literally nothing more interesting for them to be doing. It was a full out party, Joel is so lucky he got to witness the watering as well. Maybe one day I will get to see it too...but I dream...

Highlight 3: As I mentioned above its Creole festival time. Some friends and I went into the capital - Roseau to party down last Monday. I love the colors of Creole, Plaid EVERYWHERE! The people here are pretty conservative, so nothing really gets wild and crazy. At least not from what I have seen. It’s just good wholesome family fun.

Highlight 4: My favorite activity I have done on the Island so far is Beach Bash. It’s a big party put on by the student association. They do it every semester and I can’t wait for the next one. It’s completely free, you get awesome food, juice, coconut drinks, freezies, all sorts of great stuff. Its right on coconut beach, they have a DJ playing awesome music, and they rent out TONS of fun water equipment that you can use. They had Motor boats taking anyone on tube rides or banana boat rides, Kayaks anyone could take, sail boats, tones of fun stuff. It was crazy fun, I had a blast, I loved it so much. We left at about 6 when the sun was setting, up until then it had been extremely family friendly but around that time the families were heading home and it was turning into a more crazy party scene.
